Tennants FAQs

How do I pay rent?
How you pay rent will be agreed upon in your tenancy contract. At Chesworths, we can collect rent on the landlord’s behalf through a direct debit agreement.

Am I responsible for the garden if my property has one?
Gardens are a great addition to any property and can be used for a wide range of activities. However, you must consider whether you can maintain it for the duration of your tenancy as the property must be left in the same condition it was given in.

Can I renew my contract after a year?
At Chesworths, we have a tenancy renewal team who will contact tenants and landlords a month or two before a tenancy is due to end. By doing this, we can discuss your next steps and arrange a new tenancy agreement between you and your landlord if you wish to continue living in your rented property.
Do landlords allow children or pets?
Deciding to become a landlord is a big decision for many, meaning their property is their most valuable investment. Whilst landlords generally accept children and pets, this will be subject to discussion and approval as children and pets increase the chances of damage to the property.

Do I need contents insurance as a tenant?
The good news is that there are lots of tenant insurance policies available across the market. Your landlord may choose to insure the entire property, including furniture and furnishings. However, we recommend tenants take out insurance for their own possessions as these tend to not be covered by the landlord's insurance policy should the property be broken into or burgled.

Will I face penalties if I break my tenancy agreement earlier than planned?
We recommend that you do not sign or enter into any tenancy agreement unless you can commit to carrying out your responsibilities for the period specified. You can usually only end your tenancy if your landlord agrees, but they do not legally have to. This means you will be responsible for paying rent until the contract ends or a new tenant is found.
