What is council tax?
Council tax is a tax that helps pay for services provided by the County Councils in East and West Sussex, Police, Fire & Rescue Service, district and borough councils, and town and parish councils.

It is typically paid on all domestic properties, including houseboats and caravans. All residents, whether owners or tenants, are liable to pay council tax, though there are some exceptions.

How much does council tax vary according to towns and cities in Sussex?
Council tax is calculated depending on the valuation band your property falls into based on values from 1991. These values apply even if your property is newer.

The bands are as follows:
Band A – up to £40,000
Band B – £40,001 to £52,000
Band C – £52,001 to £68,000
Band D – £68,001 to £88,000
Band E – £88,001 to £120,000
Band F – £120,001 to £160,000
Band G – £160,001 to £320,000
Band H – £320,001 and above

How do I pay my council tax?
Most people choose to spread the total cost of their council tax throughout the year, preferring to pay in monthly instalments. However, you can pay it as one lump sum if you would prefer.

Most district and borough councils in Sussex will offer and accept different methods of council tax payment, such as:
Direct debit
Cash
Cheque

Many even offer online portals where residents can pay to make the process smoother.
It is also very important to inform your district or borough council tax office if you are moving; alternatively, you should get in touch with the tax office if you are struggling to make payments or haven’t paid your council tax for a while.

The borough or district will determine the total payable council tax for a property in Sussex the property is in, as well as the band it has been allocated. For more information, reach out to the Chesworths team today.
